By Dr. Oliver Anyabolu

Dr. Anyabolu gave us the slides below, and they were available during the meeting, but he never called for the slides to be advanced.  So the meeting members only heard the audio, which is at the bottom of the page.

MAP OF NIGERIA SHOWING THE 36 STATES

FULLY VACCINATED CHILDREN AGE 12-23 MONTHS

1999 -17%; 2008-23%; 2013- 25% (NDHS-2009)

To be fully vaccinated a child is required to receive BCG vaccination against tuberculosis; three doses of vaccine to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT); three doses of polio vaccine; and one dose of measles vaccine

1.5 million children die before the age of 5 years

241,00 children die every year

4.3 million children are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated

FACTORS THAT LEAD TO LOW IMMUNIZATION COVERAGE

Poor health funding-supply side

Federal Government only spends 3.9% of the budget

Nigeria does not manufacture vaccines and lack of syringes

Poor service delivery from the states to the LGA

Health facilities do not have functioning refrigerators

Poor cold chain room

LOW IMMUNIZATION COVERAGE-DEMAND SIDE
