We asked, you responded, and we listened.

Thanks to the 200+ FON members who responded to our questionnaire about our biennial meeting in August, we're planning this year’s Friends of Nigeria meeting at our own headquarters hotel. We've reserved 30 rooms for $99 per night including full buffet breakfast at the Holiday Inn - Cherry Creek. Based on requests, we are finalizing an array of Nigerian cultural speakers and practitioners from the surprisingly vibrant Nigerian diaspora community in Denver and Santa Fe. The meeting will feature Nigerian American guest lecturers, an African themed dinner, and the usual taste of Star Beer if we can get it.

Those who wish will have easy shuttle, taxi or walking access to the nearby University of Denver, where the National Peace Corps Association's annual Peace Corps Connect (PCC) meeting is being held Aug. 5 and 6. You can drop your bags and take advantage of the Holiday Inn's rates up to two days before our Thursday evening Aug. 3 session and Friday, Aug. 4 meeting and dinner, and then stay at the same price through the weekend to attend the PCC meeting. The biennial meeting is required by FON's bylaws, and we typically schedule our meetings in conjunction with PCC to allow you to weigh in on national issues with the NPCA.

Our FON registration price of $125 until July 4, $150 thereafter, includes a luncheon, as well as a dinner at the hotel, catered by a popular local West African restaurant.  The dinner-only price is $40, available for spouse(s) and/or guests(s). All of Friday's events will take place at the hotel, so you won't have to traipse all over Denver.  The net result is that you should have more time to socialize with your friends in FON. Should you be adverse to financial transactions online, you can print out this form (Denver Registration Form) and mail it with your check to Mary-Ann Palmieri,

We plan three themes for the meeting: 1) Nigerian culture (drumming, tie and dye, Oshogbo art, ethnomusicology, and literature); 2) current or recent events in Nigeria; 3) Friends of Nigeria’s aspirations and future.  Our goal is to create a meeting that will be interesting and fun, get you participating, and to ask your opinion about some of the crucial issues facing Friends of Nigeria.  Some of the artists presenting will have their work products for sale.  We will soon send out a list of recent outstanding books by Nigerians, and plan opportunities for us to discuss those books and our own experiences.

For those who prefer dorm accommodations — a minority of questionnaire respondents said they did — you can  commute to our meeting from the University of Denver where the NPCA will arrange for beds.  Check the NPCA website for details: http://www.peacecorpsconnect.org/cpages/peace-corps-connect

We will register and congregate at the hotel Thursday night, when we will also hold a Board of Directors meeting.  Then Friday morning we will elect a new Board of Directors.  The new board will then meet to elect FON officers.  Both meetings are open to all FON members. Watch the website and newsletter for details.

Make your hotel registration by calling (844) 330-7212 and identifying yourself as part of the Friends of Nigeria Peace Corps group to ensure you will get the $99 rate WITH free breakfast for everyone in the room and credit toward meeting room fees for FON.  If you would like to make your reservation online, use this link: https://www.holidayinn.com/redirect?path=rates&brandCode=hi&hotelCode=dencb&_PMID=99801505&GPC=fon

The rate for a double room is $99 plus 14.75% tax per night.  We have 30 rooms guaranteed at our special rate until July 14th, so register for rooms through the hotel well before that date.
