Away game: Boko Haram over borders

Nigeria’s government has claimed for months that the jihadist group’s insurgency is over. This summer, the armed forces say they will deal a final blow to the Islamists in the north-east. They have surrounded many of the remaining jihadists in the Sambisa forest, their last stronghold, and are working better with French-speaking armies from Chad, Niger and Cameroon. Thousands of hostages have been rescued; some would-be bombers are waving the white flag. Yet American generals say a dispute concerning ties to the Islamic State has caused Boko Haram to fracture. A new, IS-loving faction could grow nastier as it tries to impress its ailing partner. This is bad news as fighters flee to Nigeria’s less-developed neighbours: almost 500 civilians have died in Cameroon in the past year, and at least 32 people were killed in dirt-poor Niger when Boko Haram retook the border town of Bosso. The fight is far from finished.
