Lassa fever deaths rise, government takes action

The death toll from Lassa fever in 10 Nigerian states has risen to 40, the government said Feb. 10. Minister of Health Isaac Adewole was reported in the Nigerian national newspaper Vanguard that the deaths were among 86 reported cases.  Lassa fever is a haemorrhagic condition similar to Ebola. The affected states were Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo. The minister said the government is providing antiviral drugs, rapid response teams and other measures to areas where outbreaks have occurred. No travel restrictions were imposed as of Jan. 10. The first case of the current outbreak was reported in Bauchi last November. (http://allafrica.com/stories/201601130762.html)
