A reputed close associate of President President Muhammadu Buhari -- Jafaru Isah -- was arrested Jan. 6 by the anticorruption Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as part of a sweeping probe into the alleged diversion of $2.1billion that had been earmarked for arms purchases during the previous administration of Goodluck Jonathan. Meanwhile, two days later the Vanguard newspaper reported it had learned from an unidentified spokesperson for Buhari that the president would not interfere in the arrest and probe of Jafaru Isah, described as a close political ally of Buhari. Isah served as military administrator of Kaduna State from December 1993 to August 1996. The EFCC was established in the wake of Buhari’s assent to power following a pledge to attack corruption.
