FON to Support Fantsuam-BayanLoco Sewer Project
By Jim Clark (12) 64-66
As long-time supporters of the Fantsuam Foundation, Friends of Nigeria (FON) has again partnered with the foundation in a joint effort to create a safer, healthier living environment for the residents of the Kafanchan area of Northern Nigeria. This time, the FON board of directors has approved a grant of $6,000 to the foundation that will be used in a joint effort with the Bayan Loco community to develop a drainage and waste disposal system for that community. The need for such a system is explained by Fantsuam Foundation’s John Dada: “the Fantsuam Rural Health Centre records a high incidence of children and adults with complaints of water borne diseases, malaria and worm infestations. These diseases are preventable through improved communal hygiene and waste disposal. This project will mobilise the community to design and construct a better drainage and waste disposal system.”

Founded in 1996 to empower community members, particularly women, to find means of employment and income, Fantsuam Foundation’s efforts have enabled many of Kafanchan’s citizens to develop the skills required to meet their own development needs. However, there are a number of challenges still faced by many residents of Kafanchan and all over Kaduna State. Unsanitary living conditions resulting in the spread of disease combined with poor access to affordable and good health care performed in adequate facilities continue to be a major problem in the area.
Thanks to the FON grant and the labour supplied by the Bayan Loco community, Dada believes that this community is on its way to a healthier, brighter and more self-sufficient tomorrow.
