Dr. Michael Watts, Professor of Geography at U.C. Berkeley, has published three books specifically about Nigeria: Silent Violence: Food, Famine, and Peasantry in Northern Nigeria Curse of the Black Gold: 50 Years of Oil in the Niger Delta,Economies of Violence: Petroleum, Politics and Community Conflict in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. Educated at University College, London, and at the University of Michigan, he has over the last decade devoted most of his time to the oil and gas sector and to the impact of oil in the Gulf of Guinea, especially in the Niger delta region of Nigeria.
Below are the slides of Dr Watts' presentation. He only got about half way through the presentation before he ran out of time. He had spoken for over an hour, so he really ran out of time. The audio of the presentation follows. Some of the slides confused Open Office, which is used to create the .html version of the slides. None of the missing slides appear to be crucial. Do get the audio going, and then come back to this page and select the slides. The two work together quite well.Slides 1-22
