Friends of Nigeria

Annual Report

July 1997

Friends of Nigeria completed its first year with membership numbers expanding and with a growing treasury.  Our president (Cathy Onyemelukwe) and one of our Board members who is an attorney (Nick Thiemann) have been working on both our by-laws and incorporation, although to date neither has been completed.

Our principal activities consisted of the following:

  • Friends of Nigeria published four newsletters.  Cathy Onyemelukwe served as the editor, and Peter and Katy Hansen composed the newsletter and were responsible for its printing and mailing.  Judging from the numerous letters and e-mail messages the newsletter was well received by our membership.
  • A Friends of Nigeria Membership Directory was compiled, published, and distributed to all members.  This directory was responsible for the reconnection of many old Peace Corps friends -- in a number of instances after 30 years of separation.
  • Board member Bob Cohen made arrangements through Oxford University Press to allow members of Friends of Nigeria to purchase Wole Soyinka's The Open Sore of a Continent at a reduced price.
  • Greg Jones and his two sons were responsible for establishing a Friends of Nigeria website.  The URL of our website is:
